A voice for the stage
and the song.

Chinese mezzo-soprano Fengzhen Liu is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at Michigan State University, studying under the guidance of Professor Jane Bunnell. She holds both Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Vocal Performance from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, where she trained with Professor Ling Duan. Her artistry bridges the traditions of Chinese vocal music and Western bel canto technique, giving her performances a unique blend of lyricism, color, and dramatic depth.

Liu is a prizewinner of China's prestigious Golden Bell Award. She has also won First Prize at the Ode to the Red Boat National Singing Competition and the Zheng Qiufeng Vocal Works Competition, along with multiple other awards recognizing her vocal excellence. She has participated in master classes with distinguished artists including Alexandra LoBianco, Norman Reinhardt, Ian Howell, and Jane Bunnell.

Her recent operatic credits include Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi, and Seconda Conversa in Suor Angelica as an Emerging Artist with Opera in the Ozarks (2026); La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica and Mae in Ricky Ian Gordon's The Grapes of Wrath with Michigan State University Opera Theatre; Bradamante in Handel's Alcina with Chicago Summer Opera (2025); and Pirate Jenny in The Threepenny Opera (2025). In China, she performed the title role in the symphonic opera Sister Jiang as a Young Artist with the Peking University Opera Institute, and starred as Tong Jialing in the original musical To Youth with the Liuzhou Opera & Dance Theatre, touring nationally as part of the “Hundred Cities, Hundred Performances” production. She has been a featured soloist in concerts and gala performances at the Guangzhou Opera House, and has appeared in Lunar New Year celebrations and multiple solo recitals, including DMA and graduate-level programs.

Beyond the operatic stage, Liu is committed to artistic versatility and cross-cultural exchange. Her career has taken her from major concert halls in China to collaborative projects in the United States, and she continues to build her repertoire across Baroque, Classical, and contemporary works. With her warm, expressive tone and compelling stage presence, she is dedicated to connecting with audiences worldwide and contributing to the growth of the operatic art form.

Curriculum vitae

Chinese mezzo-soprano Fengzhen Liu is pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at Michigan State University, studying with Jane Bunnell. She holds Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Vocal Performance from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, where she trained with Ling Duan. Her artistry bridges Chinese vocal repertory and Western bel canto technique, giving her performances a distinctive blend of lyricism, color, and dramatic depth.

A 2026 Emerging Artist with Opera in the Ozarks, Liu sang Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro and La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi this past season. Her recent credits also include La Zia Principessa in Puccini's Suor Angelica with Michigan State University Opera Theatre, Mae in Ricky Ian Gordon's The Grapes of Wrath (MSU Opera Theatre, 2025), Bradamante in Handel's Alcina (Chicago Summer Opera, 2025), and Pirate Jenny in The Threepenny Opera.

In 2026 she appeared as featured soloist at the Meydenbauer Theater in Seattle, performing Chinese repertory and Bizet's "Habanera" from Carmen with conductor Bobby Collins. Her three DMA solo recitals at Michigan State University — A New Beginning; a Baroque Chamber Music Septet Concert; and Songs of Spring, Stillness, and the Soul — reflect a repertoire that reaches from the Baroque to the contemporary.

In China, she starred as Jiang Jie in the symphonic opera Sister Jiang with the Peking University Opera Institute, appeared as a lead at the Guangzhou Opera House, and was featured in the musical To Youth, directed by choreographer Zhang Jigang. She is a prizewinner of China's Golden Bell Award (Hunan Division) and has been recognized at the Ode to the Red Boat National Singing Competition, the Zheng Qiufeng Vocal Works Competition, and the Rome International Music Festival China Selection.

Beyond the operatic stage, Liu is committed to artistic versatility and cross-cultural exchange. She continues to build a repertoire across Baroque, Classical, and contemporary works, and is dedicated to connecting with audiences across traditions.
